JOB ARBITRATOR UPHOLDS LOCALS’ DESPATCH RIGHTS
Recently the BCMEA has been contacting casuals at home, directly, and advising them of work opportunities while dishonestly showing “Local 502” on call display. This issue was brought before an arbitrator and some of the rulings outlined in job arbitrator R. Keras’ decision in the summary disposition 2010-03 are as follows:
“The despatching ‘in effect’ within Local 502’s jurisdiction is that Local 502 has the exclusive jurisdiction of the despatch of members and casuals.”
and,
“In the result, on a careful review of the evidence and counsel submissions, and in the particular circumstances of this instance, the Union’s issue succeeds to the extent described above and the order to cease such practice is limited to the ‘spoofing’ and the despatch telephone number components of the disputed broadcast.”
If you are continuing to receive aggravating phone calls at home that do not provide you with valuable work information and you wish to cease these calls from the BCMEA you can block this number:
1-866-462-2632
Contact your phone service provider for more information on how to block this caller.
You may also feel free to voice your complaints about these calls to the BCMEA, or going to Local 502’s dispatch hall and filling out a formal complaint form.
