Day of Action for Paid Sick Leave events today in Victoria, Surrey and Burnaby

(Unceded Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam territories — Vancouver, BC) — Supporters of 10 days of employer-paid sick leave will gather for three Covid-safe events today in Victoria, Surrey and Burnaby. 

The BCFED’s Day of Action for Paid Sick Leave marks the last day of the BC government’s consultation over whether to require employers to offer three, five or 10 days of paid sick leave. It comes after publication of an open letter signed by more than 70 business, community and labour groups calling for 10 days of paid sick leave. 

Victoria: 
Supporters will gather on the steps of the BC Legislature. After a series of brief remarks, they will move to Belleville Street to wave signs and collect signatures on an open letter calling on the BC government to enact 10 days of paid sick leave. Labour, community and business leaders as well as individual workers will be available for media comment at 12:30 by the entrance to the Premier’s office or by prior arrangement.

Surrey and Burnaby: 
Supporters will collect digital signatures from commuters on an open letter calling on the BC government to opt for 10 days of paid sick leave. They’ll also hand out stickers and invite people to post selfies using the hashtag “#10days” in support of the campaign.

  • Location: Sidewalk at the bus loop outside Surrey Central SkyTrain station  

Burnaby

  • Time: October 25, 4:00–5:30 pm  
  • Location: Outside the Metrotown SkyTrain entrance across from the bus loop on Central Boulevard
