Centre for Future Work Webinar: The Importance of Unions in Reducing Racial Inequality
The Centre for Future Work will be releasing some important new research early next week, analyzing recent Statistics Canada data on employment, wages, and union coverage for workers across the various racialized categories that Statistics Canada now maintains in its labour force data.
Join a one-hour webinar with the authors of the study (Winnie Ng, Salmaan Khan, and Jim Stanford) to explore the findings of the report, and the implications for unions. The webinar will be chaired by Larry Rousseau, Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress. TL:DR: racialized workers constitute a growing share of the total labour force, but are underrepresented in unions. Unions raise their wages and job quality, but they need stronger union protection – and unions need to build their membership among racialized workers and communities. The paper concludes with several suggestions for strengthening unions’ anti-racist work in all areas.
