Petition: Solidarity with SEIU Local 2 SkyTrain janitorial workers
*Sharing on behalf of SEIU Local 2 and the Vancouver District Labour Council*
Vancouver SkyTrain janitors are facing ongoing mistreatment, unsafe working conditions, and unjustified layoffs in what the workers say is an effort to break their Union by the cleaning contractor, Dexterra Group. To date, 25 workers (~20% of the workforce) have been laid off. Workloads have increased to unsustainable and unsafe levels.
Workers are not being provided with adequate cleaning supplies and PPE to do the job and are instructed to clean surfaces and bathrooms with only water. Workers are told to clean the yellow safety line while trains are operating, which is extremely dangerous. Workers are threatened with layoffs when they speak up.
We call on TransLink to:
• Immediately meet with a worker delegation and their union representatives
• Ensure their contractor ends all forms of bullying, harassment, and union busting
• Ensure their contractor enforces proper health and safety standards, including WHMIS compliance
• Instruct their contractor to immediately halt layoffs and ensure safe staffing levels
